The letter E does many jobs, including changing letter sounds and making sure words follow the rules of English.
We can add letter e to make a vowel sound long, like in the words invite.
We can add letter e because English words don’t end in v or u, like in the words give.
We can add letter e because every syllable needs a vowel, like in the words candle.
We can add e so that c and g say their soft sounds, like in the words prince.
We can add e to make th say its voiced sound, like in the words bathe.
Unit 2:
We are currently working through unit 2. The focus of Unit 2 is learning about the different syllable types. Understanding how to divide words into various syllable types helps us spell longer, multi-syllabic words.
A note about decoding...
Decoding is essential to reading. It allows kids to figure out most words they’ve heard but have never seen in print and sound out words they’re unfamiliar with. The ability to decode is the foundation upon which all other reading instruction—fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, etc… are built.
